Summary: Experiencing International Soccer In Atlanta At Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium: Atlanta's Premier Sports Venue

Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) in Atlanta, Georgia, is the premier venue for major sporting events in the state. This state-of-the-art facility has hosted numerous marquee events, including NFL playoff games, NCAA national championship games and MLS Cup finals. Located in downtown Atlanta near the world-famous CNN Center, it is also home to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL and Atlanta United of Major League Soccer (MLS).

It was no surprise when Mercedes-Benz Stadium was selected to host several matches during a major international soccer competition in 2026, including matches that attracted fans and visitors from around the world.

Attending An International Soccer Match In Atlanta

The major international soccer competition that takes place every four years is the most prestigious tournament in soccer. This global event surpasses the Olympics and virtually every other sporting event in worldwide viewership, attendance and revenue. Remarkably, only eight countries have won the tournament among more than 200 national teams throughout its history.

In 2026, the United States, Mexico and Canada jointly hosted the tournament, creating the largest international soccer event ever with 48 teams. This gave North American residents a tremendous opportunity to experience the event firsthand by attending matches, fan experiences and watch parties across all three host nations.

The tournament featured 12 groups of four teams, with 32 nations advancing to the knockout stage after group play. I was fortunate to secure tickets for my wife, Glenda, and I to attend the match between Uzbekistan and DR Congo on the final day of group-stage competition.

Match Day Experiences In Downtown Atlanta

One of the easiest ways to reach Mercedes-Benz Stadium for major events such as the World Cup is via MARTA, metro Atlanta's rail system connecting the northern suburbs, downtown and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. We parked in a free MARTA parking deck and took the train to the station nearest the stadium. Anticipating large crowds, we planned to arrive two hours before kickoff.

As soon as we arrived downtown, we noticed the festive atmosphere. The free fan experience area was bustling with activity, local restaurants and bars welcomed international visitors, and volunteers helped guide spectators throughout the city while offering tips on where to cool off during the hot summer afternoon.

Following recommendations from several volunteers, we spent some time inside the Georgia World Congress Center exploring exhibits at the Georgia Pavilion. Visitors could enjoy interactive displays, complimentary snacks and refreshments, and opportunities to meet fellow soccer fans from around the world.

The tournament app later notified us that early stadium entry had been activated. We took advantage of the opportunity to visit the merchandise store inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium and pick up souvenirs, including T-shirts and pins. It was also exciting to see supporters from both DR Congo and Uzbekistan proudly displaying their national flags and traditional attire while gathering around the stadium hours before the match.

Inside The Action At Mercedes-Benz Stadium

As with many major sporting events we watched on television, the atmosphere began building long before kickoff. A presenter energized supporters from both nations, raising the noise level throughout the venue. Even at major NFL and MLS events, I had never experienced such passionate support before a match had even started.

The pre-match ceremony concluded with giant national flags stretched across the field and participation from both starting and reserve players as they sang their national anthems alongside thousands of supporters in attendance.

Once the match kicked off, the excitement reached another level. Although neither Uzbekistan nor DR Congo was ranked among the world's top 50 national teams, the stakes remained high because the eight best third-place teams still had an opportunity to advance to the knockout round.

Uzbekistan, the lower-ranked side, employed a defensive strategy built around long-ball counterattacks that created problems for DR Congo. By halftime, Uzbekistan held a surprising 1-0 lead, and both nations appeared likely to miss out on advancement.

But DR Congo seemed to have a twelfth player: the crowd. Nearly 70% of the stadium appeared to be supporting Congo and never stopped cheering. The energy was contagious.

An incredible second-half comeback saw Congo score three goals, with each strike making the stadium feel louder than the one before. The atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever experienced at a sporting event. With an impressive 3-1 victory, DR Congo eliminated South Korea from contention and secured a place in a knockout-round match against England, which would also be played in Atlanta the following week.

Final Thoughts On The Atlanta Soccer Experience

Attending a match at the world's biggest sporting event was truly a dream come true. Mercedes-Benz Stadium delivered a first-class fan experience, combining modern facilities, efficient transportation access and an electric atmosphere that exceeded expectations.

Food prices inside the stadium and transportation costs were surprisingly reasonable for an event of this scale, making the experience even more enjoyable. From the exciting pre-match festivities throughout downtown Atlanta to the unforgettable action inside the stadium, every part of the day felt special.

We highly recommend attending a major soccer event such as this, even if only to experience the incredible atmosphere and international camaraderie that make the sport so unique.
