Exploring Montréal And Quebec City: A French-Canadian Adventure
I grew up near Canada in Michigan and studied French for six years, so Quebec had been on my travel wish list for ages. I wanted to experience its historic French-Canadian cities, European charm and exceptional food.
After two previously canceled attempts due to work and family conflicts, everything finally came together this year. Even better, a friend who had never been to Quebec had two complimentary nights in Montréal. What a great opportunity.
Getting To Quebec: Transportation Tips And Travel Planning
Transportation is always my first planning puzzle because that's often where unexpected challenges arise. Flying directly into Montréal or Québec City from the United States was expensive and inconvenient, so I got creative. Since I already had a family event in Detroit, I built the trip from there.
I love taking trains whenever possible. While there isn't a direct route from Detroit to Montréal, the
VIA Rail train between Montréaland Québec City was excellent. I highly recommend it.
Google Flights saved the day with a reasonably priced Delta flight from Detroit to Burlington, Vermont. It was a great find.
Renting a car came with an unexpected daily fee for crossing into Canada, and rental rates were already high. Always check licensing, insurance and cross-border requirements when traveling internationally.
Greyhound offered an affordable route between Burlington and Montréal with a travel time of about three hours, including border control. The outbound bus was shiny and new, while the return bus had definitely seen better days. Even so, I would gladly take this route again.
The DoubleTree by Hilton and Homewood Suites by Hilton
in Burlington both offered complimentary shuttles with friendly drivers that ran between the airport and the central business district.
Lyft was surprisingly affordable and reliable in every city we visited.
The Montréal City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour was a smart choice. We saw the city from Mount Royal, learned that Montréal is one large island, and enjoyed a wonderful brunch, complete with desserts, at Duc de Lorraine, the city's oldest French patisserie, conveniently located along the route.
Where To Stay In Montréal And Québec City
I now have a new travel rule: Always keep a personal copy of every reservation. My friend accidentally booked our Montréal hotel for the wrong week, so we arrived without a valid reservation. Thankfully, patience and a helpful hotel team got everything sorted out.
In Québec City, Hilton rooms were unavailable even months in advance, so we tried a competitor. The room felt as though it had been untouched since the early 2000s and was clearly awaiting renovation. Needless to say, Hilton remains my hotelier of choice.
Montréal Highlights: Mount Royal, Dining And The Golden Square Mile
We discovered that Burlington is home to the University of Vermont. Move-in week explained the higher hotel rates. Enjoying dinner on Lake Champlain while watching the sun set over the Adirondack Mountains was a wonderful experience.
The Vogue Hotel Montréal is a boutique Hilton property in the Golden Square Mile near the base of Mount Royal. The neighborhood is highly walkable, with excellent restaurants, shopping and the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts nearby. I loved the contrast of charming low-rise buildings with modern skyscrapers rising behind them, along with the beautiful flower displays throughout the city.
Québec City Highlights: Historic Streets, French Culture And Day Trips
Québec City delivered the charm and history I had hoped for. Its walkable European-style streets provided plenty of opportunities to practice my French, although nearly everyone also spoke English. The city's patisseries, crêperies, brasseries and boulangeries were highlights in their own right.
A day trip to Île d'Orléans, Montmorency Falls and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré turned out to be one of the trip's biggest surprises. The sanctuary, the oldest Catholic pilgrimage site in North America, is among the most awe-inspiring churches I have visited, even compared with many I have seen in Europe.
Travel Lessons And Unexpected Detours
Our final lesson was simple: Always pack patience and a positive attitude when traveling.
Leaving Burlington, my friend and I both faced delayed or canceled flights on different airlines headed to different parts of the country. Her flight was delayed for more than five hours before ultimately being canceled because of weather.
My flight was delayed, and then we learned the incoming aircraft had experienced a bird strike and required additional maintenance inspections.

Since neither of us could make our final connections home, we spent one more night in Burlington and enjoyed another beautiful sunset dinner by the lake.
