Finding A Slower Pace On The Baja California Peninsula

Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico's most popular vacation destinations, but have you heard of its quieter neighbor, San José del Cabo? If not, you should. Think quiet beaches, a charming downtown, a welcoming culture and some of the best tacos you'll ever eat.

A Warm Welcome At Cabo Azul

We stayed at Cabo Azul, a Hilton Vacation Club in San José del Cabo, situated at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was special. We were there celebrating Todd's birthday, and somehow the resort seemed to be celebrating right along with us.

After dropping our bags in the room, we headed straight to the beach. Soft, warm sand stretched for miles, rolling waves crashed along the shore and lounge chairs practically called our names.

And the pool? It doesn't get much more beautiful. Every evening after a day of exploring, we found ourselves back there. We swam up to the bar for a cocktail, floated near the fire pit that added a touch of elegance to the setting and made friends from around the world while relaxing in the spa.

But the best part was the short walk, or quick Uber ride, into downtown San José del Cabo, where local culture and incredible cuisine awaited. You guessed it: the tacos.

An Ongoing Quest For The Perfect Taco

Why, you might ask, have I been so obsessed with tacos? First of all, I'm a self-proclaimed expert when it comes to Taco Tuesday. But my passion for tacos on this trip really stems from a conversation we overheard on the flight home. The woman sitting across the aisle from us told her travel companion, "I never ate one good taco my whole time here."

How is that even possible, especially when we came across the al pastor tacos at La Lupita Taco & Mezcal on our first night? As an added bonus, they were paired with a tequila tasting and live music.

Then came the homemade fish tacos we prepared ourselves under the guidance of Chef Francisco from Juan More Taco Tours. If you've never considered taking a cooking class while traveling, you should. We met at a local market, shopped for fresh ingredients and then headed to Chef Francisco's home, where we prepared and shared an authentic meal together. Next up were tacos at El Mesón del Ahorcado, served alongside a salsa charcuterie.

On our final night, we enjoyed more al pastor tacos at Tacos Nene, a small open-air restaurant off the beaten path that we never would have discovered without a local recommendation. That's actually how we found all of these places. Twice, the concierge at Cabo Azul recommended the perfect dinner spot. The second time, we returned with his favorite tacos from the menu as a thank-you.

An Evening Sail To El Arco

Cabo San Lucas is about a 45-minute drive from San José del Cabo. That means you can still experience many of the activities Cabo is famous for, including a sunset sail to El Arco, also known as The Arch.

Since we weren't planning to spend much time in Cabo San Lucas but still wanted to experience a sunset cruise, we opted for a guided excursion instead of renting a car. The concierge at Cabo Azul handled all the arrangements, and an air-conditioned bus picked us up right outside the lobby.

Onboard the sailboat, we enjoyed music, snacks, cocktails and one of the most beautiful sunsets we've ever seen. We sailed past El Arco, paused long enough for photos and watched the sun make its final descent before heading back to the dock. Soon we were back on the bus and returning to our resort, our quiet home base waiting exactly where we wanted it to be.

More Ways To Experience San José del Cabo

Of course, there's more to do in San José del Cabo than search for the perfect taco. Here are a few of our favorite experiences.

Watch The Sunrise Over The Beach

Not everyone enjoys waking up early on vacation, but the expansive shoreline at Cabo Azul practically begs for a sunrise stroll. On our final morning, we brewed coffee in our 1-bedroom suite which included a full kitchen, and headed for the beach. It felt like we had stumbled upon a secret. The light was soft, the ocean was calm and the sky transformed before our eyes.

Spend An Evening In Plaza Mijares

Plaza Mijares, the town's central square, is where locals and visitors gather night after night. One evening, we sat on a bench and watched a group of young performers share a traditional Danza Azteca, complete with ceremonial drums and ayoyotes, the seed-pod rattles tied around their ankles.

Experiencing that moment felt like a gentle embrace from an old friend. For a brief time, we weren't tourists. We were familia.

Sample Local Tequila And Mezcal

As you might expect, tequila is easy to find in Mexico. What makes the experience special are the small, family-owned shops scattered throughout town. Sitting down for a tasting and learning about the traditions, history and craftsmanship behind each variety adds a deeper appreciation for every sip.

Visit A Swimmable Beach

While the waters in front of Cabo Azul are not suitable for swimming because of strong currents and dangerous undertows, nearby Playa Palmilla offers a different experience. This Blue Flag-certified public beach is a short drive away and features calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Ask, And You Shall Receive

So let's go back to the woman on the plane, the one who "never ate one good taco" during her entire trip at Cabo. I've thought about her often since we landed. I don't think she had bad luck. I think she never asked.

She never asked the concierge where he'd take his own family for dinner. She never asked a shop owner what his grandmother used to make. She never wandered a few blocks beyond the resort strip to see what was waiting there.

And because she didn't ask, she missed it.

The al pastor tacos. The unforgettable salsa charcuterie board. The family-owned mezcal shop. The Danza Azteca performance in the plaza. The tacos that eventually became a thank-you gift for the concierge who had become a trusted friend.

San José del Cabo isn't hiding its best moments. It's simply waiting for you to ask what they are.
