Why MarBrisa Is An Ideal Southern California Home Base
I’ve lived and worked in California on and off over the years, and I always love coming back, especially for vacation. I often target Hilton Grand Vacations Club for travel during the shoulder or off-season to economize on Points and plan multiple trips each year. I recently spent a week at one of my favorite HGV resorts, MarBrisa, a Hilton Grand Vacations Club.
Located about a mile from the Pacific Ocean, just 45 minutes from San Diego and right next to Legoland® California, MarBrisa offers a convenient location for all types of travelers. Shopping, including Carlsbad Premium Outlets, dining and outdoor activities are all close by, making it an easy place to enjoy a variety of experiences without long drives.

Resort Amenities Designed For Relaxation And Fun
The resort itself is expansive, with beautiful landscaping, vibrant flowers, walking trails and a barbecue picnic area. The Cove area features a family pool with a waterslide as well as a quieter adults-only pool. Multiple hot tubs, a gas firepit and a poolside bar serving lunch make it easy to spend an entire day on the property.
After relaxing in the sun with a good book, we enjoyed the resort's afternoon trivia and karaoke. We also took advantage of nearby grocery stores to stock our kitchen for quick breakfasts and simple dinners. A nearby Costco made it easy to handle larger shopping needs and refuel the rental car affordably.

Nature And Gardens Near Carlsbad
One morning began with a guided hike sponsored by the resort. We explored nearby ravines and hilltops while learning about local wildlife and plants. Another day was spent at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. The gardens feature rainforest paths, desert landscapes, and a lookout tower with views of greenhouses, neighborhoods and the Pacific Ocean.
Driving back along the Pacific Coast Highway offered stunning ocean views. We made a stop in downtown Carlsbad for shopping and a visit to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. The four-scoop sampler is worth the indulgence.

Exploring Balboa Park And The San Diego Zoo
Balboa Park in San Diego is a must-visit destination that can easily fill several days. Highlights include the Japanese Friendship Garden, numerous museums and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
Because we were traveling with a friend recovering from knee surgery, we planned carefully for the zoo’s hilly terrain. Taking the free zoo bus tour first helped us understand the layout and elevation changes. We then took the Skyfari® Aerial Tram to the back of the park near the polar bears, then walked downhill past the pandas to the elevator. The Treetops Way offered an accessible route through the primate areas, while the Urban Jungle provided excellent views of giraffes.
A Day At The San Diego Zoo Safari Park
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido deserves its own full day. The Africa Tram is a standout experience, offering views of animals roaming across wide-open landscapes.
Visitors should note that temperatures inland can be 10 to 15 degrees warmer than along the coast. When we visited, temperatures exceeded 100 degrees, so dressing appropriately, wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated are essential.

An Unforgettable Day Trip To Catalina Island
For a more adventurous experience, a day trip to Catalina Island is well worth the effort. Dana Point is an easy 45-minute drive north of Carlsbad, where the Catalina Express ferry takes about 90 minutes each way.
Snorkeling in the kelp forests was unforgettable, with towering kelp stalks swaying with the waves as fish moved through the water. There is also an easy two-mile hike from Avalon through the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden, offering beautiful views of the harbor and surrounding hills. Golf carts are the primary mode of transportation, so keep an eye out as you explore.
Ending The Week With A La Jolla Sunset
We wrapped up the week by watching the sunset over the ocean from the cliffs near the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla. Parking in the dirt lot was easy, and the short walk to the cliffs led to sweeping views of the coastline and crashing waves. It was the perfect way to end a week that truly brought our California dreams to life.
