Lake Tahoe has always been known for everything snow bunnies love about winter après ski. Lake Tahoe is also the perfect destination to escape the summer heat and enjoy outdoor activities among the trees in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Here are just some of the activities you might enjoy if you add Lake Tahoe to your summer vacation plans:

Hiking Across the Sierra Nevada

The Lake Tahoe region offers hiking at different difficulty levels, which means that no matter who you are traveling with or what your comfort level with hiking is, you should be able to find a trail that fits your needs. One of my favorite trails is the Historic Train Tunnels near Donner Park, which offers amazing views of Donner Lake and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is also a good starting point for both day hiking and biking, and includes a fish observation deck as well as access to the beach. For those who are more adventurous, find ways to connect to the famed Pacific Crest Trail, where you can make a weekend out of hiking the legendary loop that so many hikers view as a side quest on their through-hike adventure.

Step Into Lake Tahoe’s Past

A must-see for history buffs, The Tallac Historic Site features buildings dating back to when Lake Tahoe was settled and includes live demonstrations depicting how those early settlers survived. With its direct access to the beach, it’s a great place to check out the blue waters. Hiking and bike trails loop through this location, making it an easy stop for day hikers as well.

High-Altitude Thrills At Heavenly Ski Resort

Though the slopes are dedicated to downhill skiing in winter, Heavenly Ski Resort offers lots of summer activities. My favorite is the gravity coaster that takes you down the slope using gravity as its motor. Getting to the coaster is just as much fun as going down, since you ride a gondola to your destination.

Scenic Views At Every Turn

Perhaps the easiest way to take in the spectacular views of this region is to drive the loop around Lake Tahoe. In about two and a half hours (or longer if you stop to check out beaches, food or local vendors) you can cover the entire perimeter of Lake Tahoe. It will not disappoint. In fact, you may wonder whether the lake can get any prettier than it already is.

Casual Dining In South Lake Tahoe

Base Camp Pizza Company is the perfect place to rest your weary feet. Located in the heart of South Lake Tahoe’s bustling tourist area and right next to the Heavenly Gondola station, it’s the perfect respite from a busy day.
