Learning Confidence Through Early International Travel

My first overseas trip was to France in high school as part of a three-week summer excursion in the late 1990s. It was amazing! I learned how to communicate in another language, understand social cues to learn local customs, and be street-smart while enjoying many new experiences. Since then, I have honed my international travel skills through working for a Japanese company, consulting across Europe, and through personal travel to more than 40 countries. Business travel had made me comfortable traveling solo for leisure adventures to expand my horizons. By doing some research in advance, you can travel more easily knowing that you are prepared.

Choosing Between Multi-City Travel And A Central Base

When planning your international trip, one big question is whether you prefer an “on-the-go” trip where you visit multiple cities or countries by switching hotels/resorts every few days. An alternative is to pick a central hotel/resort and do day trips from there. I have shifted to the latter over the years and take full advantage of public transportation to explore a particular area. With advanced planning through HGV, you can successfully leverage Hilton and vacation exchange company options like RCI®.

Using AI To Explore Itinerary And Activity Options

With artificial intelligence (AI), you can quickly generate customized itinerary ideas by using simple search prompts with the following topics:

  • Day trips from a central location, or traveling for a few days in specific locations

  • Modes of transportation: fastest route, cheapest method, most scenic views

  • Who is in your travel party: Solo, multigenerational, ages of children, mobility concerns accommodated

  • Your interests or hobbies: Gardens, castles, historic sites, sports events, art museums, food tours, cooking classes

  • Outdoor excursions such as guided hiking, biking or kayaking trips

Validating Travel Information Before You Go

As with any AI results, do your due diligence on the recommendations by using original source websites to validate the accuracy of information about accessibility, schedules and costs.

Weighing Transportation Costs, Comfort And Independence

Car rentals can be the most flexible option for remote locations, but they are also much more expensive, with some providers charging daily fees for crossing borders, so be sure to factor that into your budget. Both auto and travel insurance are wise choices, and I have found that filing claims is straightforward. Do not be deterred by having to drive on the other side of the road if you haven’t done that before. Proceed with caution, knowing that there will be subtle reminders that something is different, such as when you see parked cars in the “wrong direction” or turn on the windshield wipers every time you try to use the turn signal. Seeing rural and national park areas in Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand was worth stretching beyond my comfort zone.

Passport Validity, Visas And Entry Requirements

Once you know which countries you are going to visit, the first thing to confirm is that you have a valid passport that will not expire within 6 months of your trip. Even experienced travelers (including my best friend) forget this basic check. Secondly, validate which visas and/or registrations are required for each country. Places like New Zealand require an Electronic Travel Authorization — essentially an online registration in advance with a reasonable payment. The most complex place I traveled to was Moscow, Russia. That included sending my passport to the Russian embassy with an application for a visa that I was to place in my passport before I departed.

Staying Informed About Safety And Travel Advisories

The U.S. Department of State has a wealth of information to help plan a safe international trip. I always check the latest Travel Advisories and read each country and province/state/region entry. Many of the articles can be alarming, but keep in mind that from multiple countries’ perspectives, the United States has its own travel warnings for safety concerns due to gun violence, theft, and domestic terrorism. Use your own judgment regarding your specific travel destination. Always register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before you depart so that your presence is known in an emergency. I recommend having the contact details for the nearest U.S. Embassy readily available during your trip. Fortunately, I have not had to use the embassy's services directly, but I typically include a walk by the embassy because it can be located in an interesting area to explore. The Embassy Row area in Washington, D.C. is a great example.

Discovering Places Through Everyday Details

Once I arrive, I prefer to walk as much as possible to immerse myself in the area. I often take side streets or meander through residential areas to see what daily life might be like. My pictures can be of mundane things, such as doors that catch my eye:

  • A front door with beautiful hydrangeas, walking back from the beach in Dubrovnik, Croatia

  • A red spa doorway in Koh Samui, Thailand

  • A door within a door at the Duomo in Florence, Italy

  • A Norwegian house back door in Kirkenes, after catching blue crab out of a frozen lake

  • An unexpected hillside door, traveling from Sarajevo to Mostar in Bosnia

  • A turret door within the walled city of Saint-Malo, France

What doors will you open on your next international travel adventure?
