Summary: 5 essential tips for visiting Universal's Epic Universe in Orlando, from a first-time visitor

I recently visited Universal Epic Universe in Orlando with my adult twins as a belated college graduation present. We had a blast. Here are a few tips should you plan a visit.

Epic Universe Orlando features five immersive parks.

The beautiful Celestial Park is the hub, with each of the other four parks accessible through an entrance portal. They include Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – The Isle of Berk and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.

They’re immersive and feature rides geared towards each theme. My daughter favored Isle of Berk, based on the “How to Train a Dragon” movies. This park seemed most geared to young children. Super Nintendo World feels as if you’ve walked into a video game and the noise can be overwhelming. Dark Universe is horror-themed and contains the best ride in the park, Monsters Unchained. I found the Ministry of Magic the most crowded, likely due to the demand for the ride, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.

Epic Universe Orlando shines at night.

Universal set out to put the “park” back into theme park and succeeded. Conventional wisdom says to arrive when a park opens, but Celestial Park is gorgeous and surprisingly peaceful at night, complete with dancing fountains. We never had trouble finding seats during the day, and the park took on a special magic at night.

Express passes are worth getting.

If you want to experience the park in a single day and rides are a priority, Express Passes are well worth the investment.

I took things a step further by booking a non‑private VIP tour, which cost an additional $150 per person beyond the Express Pass. During the four‑and‑a‑half‑hour tour, we walked onto every ride in the park. Our guide carefully planned the route to maximize efficiency, starting us in Super Nintendo World because those attractions, he explained, shut down at the slightest hint of rain. One quick caution: The Ministry ride and several others are prone to technical glitches and unexpected closures, so it’s important to download the app and check wait times and ride status frequently throughout the day. Our guide was constantly monitoring updates on his phone to adjust our plans in real time.

Prices for tickets, Express Passes and VIP tours vary by day and package, so it’s smart to research options before booking. In some cases, a private VIP tour split among 10 people can cost about the same as a non‑private tour.

Horror fans will love the Dark Universe.

We spent time talking with a vampire hunter inside The Burning Blade Tavern and later crossed paths with Igor, who wandered around carrying a “severed leg.” Dark Universe is a must‑see for Universal monster fans, and I easily could have spent hours after dark simply soaking in the atmosphere and scenery.

Why stay at a Hilton Grand Vacations resort?

I splurged on a stay at the new Universal hotel Stella Luna, which included early entry to Universal parks and free bus transportation. If I were planning the trip today, I’d choose a Hilton Grand Vacations resort instead. This is because the Stella Luna room felt inferior to Hilton Grand Vacations accommodations. More importantly, Epic Universe is a nighttime park, making early entry far less valuable than it sounds. Staying at a Hilton Grand Vacations resort can also save money, especially on breakfast and some dinners, while the cost of transportation is minimal compared to the premium price of a Universal hotel.

Key Takeaways

  • Epic Universe Orlando Is Designed for Immersion: Celestial Park connects four highly themed lands through portal-style entrances that feel like attractions themselves.

  • Each Land Serves a Different Audience: Isle of Berk is ideal for families, Dark Universe appeals to horror fans and the Ministry of Magic draws consistent crowds.

  • Nighttime Is the Best Time to Visit: Crowds thin out and Celestial Park becomes more visually impressive after dark.

  • Express Passes Save Time: Especially valuable for one-day visits or peak travel periods.

  • Off-site Resorts Can Offer Better Value: Hilton Grand Vacations resorts provide larger accommodations, dining flexibility and strong overall value for Epic Universe trips.
