Holiday Dreams Come True In South Lake Tahoe

In the northeastern United States, we are blessed with sensational skiing. My daughter Leona enjoyed many local runs as a young skier. So when she came to my wife and me one day and proclaimed, “I want to go to Lake Tahoe to ski,” we were taken aback. After all, we didn’t need to cross the country to find great slopes. But as her wish turned into a dream, we knew we’d have to make it happen.

I quickly picked up skiing myself, hoping to share the slopes with her. I wanted to experience the thing that she loved so much right alongside her. So my wife and I started planning our Lake Tahoe trip, not expecting that it would turn into a battle of wills and a lesson in perseverance.

The Journey West: Traveling to Lake Tahoe During the Holidays

We booked our stay for Christmas week at the Hilton Vacation Club Lake Tahoe Resort, and when the day arrived, so did a major snowstorm in our hometown of Boston. After 12 hours of delays at Boston Logan International Airport, we were told we couldn’t board our flight because we would no longer reach New York in time for our connection. My wife and daughters were teary-eyed and crushed, but I refused to give up.

After nearly two more hours in line at the rescheduling desk, we were told we couldn’t reach Reno that week. Before my wife and kids could react, I told the agent, “Get me within 200 miles, and I’ll drive the rest.” Fifteen minutes later, Leona and I boarded a flight to San Francisco. My wife and older daughter followed an hour later.

We Were On Our Way

We reunited in San Francisco, picked up our rental car and turned the setback into an adventure. As we pulled away, I shifted the mood by saying, “If we had flown to Reno, we never would have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge.” Energized by that thought, we headed north through the winding hills of wine country, climbed into the Sierra Nevada range and eventually descended into Reno. There we encountered our next obstacle: Our luggage, including all of our ski equipment, never left Boston. Seeing the disappointment on Leona’s face, I smiled and said, “Have you learned nothing from this adventure about perseverance? We’re here. We will ski.”

First Impressions Of Lake Tahoe

On December 22, we drove south from Reno to Lake Tahoe. Our first glimpse of the lake stopped us cold. It is the largest alpine lake in North America, stretching more than 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and over 1,600 feet deep. It holds more water than any lake in the U.S. outside of the Great Lakes. Framed by sheer cliffs and snow-capped peaks, its crystal clarity was mesmerizing.

The resort welcomed us warmly and even checked us in five hours early. We stocked up on groceries and threw ourselves into the adventure, letting the energy of the trip carry us forward. After an hour or two of axe throwing at a local spot, we feasted at Izabella Ristorante, a wonderful Italian restaurant nearby. Not long after, exhaustion set in, but so did gratitude. We were reminded just how comfortable HGV mattresses are when away from home and happily lay our heads down that night.

A Yacht On The Lake

The next morning, the staff surprised us with an offer for a complimentary private yacht tour later that evening. Instead of a crowded party boat, we had the deck to ourselves, complete with drinks and snacks. As the sun set behind the towering mountains around us, the lake shimmered with colors no camera could truly capture. That evening was unforgettable, one of those rare family moments when you know you are exactly where you are meant to be.

Christmas Eve And A White Christmas

Our Christmas Eve tradition usually finds us hosting family at home over a well-cooked meal, so during our first Christmas away from everyone, we knew we needed to do something special. We pinned our hopes on the Riva Grill next door to the Hilton Vacation Club Lake Tahoe Resort. To say the service met our expectations would be selling the experience short. Every detail was thoughtfully handled, and the food was so remarkable that for a moment, we forgot how far we were from our family.

Later that night, with ma in her kerchief and I in my cap, we settled down for a long winter’s nap. As we woke the next morning, we quickly realized that Lake Tahoe, where dreams were being made, had one more incredible gift for us: a truly white Christmas. Overnight, the region had been blanketed with 10 inches of fresh white powder, something we hadn’t experienced at home in many years. Better yet, it was time for Leona’s dream to come true. We were finally skiing Heavenly Resort.

Skiing Heavenly Resort

Heavenly Resort lives up to its name. Spanning nearly 4,800 acres, it dwarfs most northeast resorts, which average under 300 acres. Its longest run stretches five miles, far beyond the one-mile trails we are used to.

That day, we carved through silky powder, winding from peak to valley with Lake Tahoe glistening below, all on rented gear since our luggage had yet to arrive. It was unlike anything we had ever skied. The look on Leona’s face said everything. Her dream had become reality, and I was right there beside her, taking it all in.

Lessons And Reflections

We filled our final days with tubing and quiet time by the fire. As the trip came to a close, my wife and I began to realize that being a Hilton Grand Vacations Member is more than a passport to the world. For us and many other Members, it’s a way to make dreams come true, again and again.

For Leona, that meant skiing Heavenly. For our family, the entire trip became a dream come true. For all of us, it delivered a deeper lesson: Persistence turns obstacles into opportunities. Our Lake Tahoe journey was not just about slopes and scenery. It was about proving that when you commit to a dream, you find a way to make it real. And with Hilton Grand Vacations, those dreams can quickly become reality.
