When most people picture Myrtle Beach, they think of warm ocean waves, sandy beaches and classic boardwalks that bring back childhood memories of visits to arcades and ice cream shops. For my wife and me, Myrtle Beach stands out as one of the best places to experience a country music festival. For the past decade, this coastal city has been home to the Carolina Country Music Festival featuring four unforgettable days filled with performances from rising stars and some of the biggest names in country music, all right on the beach.

Myrtle Beach is a convenient town to visit. There is an airport right near the heart of the action. Getting in and out is a breeze, whether you're flying in for a quick getaway or planning a longer trip. We frequent two locations depending on our moods. The Carolina GrandeTM, literally just across the street from the beach, offers a real hotel feel with the added benefit of a kitchen, so you can prepare your own meals if that is how you wish to vacation. This is the kind of place that you’ll love if you are part of the rideshare generation, as you can get almost anywhere on foot (or by renting golf carts). This is the resort we choose when we want to walk to all our favorite places. Be sure to check out breakfast at either Harry’s Breakfast Pancakes or Donald’s Pancake House. Both provide plenty of food to fuel you for the day. If shopping for beach souvenirs, check out Gay Dolphin Gift Cove, where you will find plenty of T-shirts, painted shells and small ships miraculously inserted into little glass bottles. Carolina Grand is where you want to stay to be in the heart of the action from sunup until sundown.

Harbor LightsTM is our go-to resort when we want a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s tucked away just enough from the main beach scene to offer a peaceful escape. You can expect about a 15-minute drive to reach the shore. Parking at Myrtle Beach is rarely a problem, even on concert nights. We usually find free spots, though paid lots are available if you want to be closer to the action. We stay at Harbor Lights with family since it’s easier to get to grocery stores for those shared meals. If you’re in the mood for a drink without hopping in the car, head to the Landing at the Boathouse, which is within walking distance from all the Harbor Lights buildings. It’s a charming spot to sit by the channel and enjoy live music or join in on Trivia Night, held every Wednesday.

If the beach isn’t your scene, Myrtle Beach has lots more to offer. You’ll find several state parks nearby for hiking. A great place to start is The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, about a 30-minute drive from either resort location. Stroll along the marsh boardwalks, book a fishing charter or grab a delicious cup of coffee at one of the pop-up shops by the boardwalk. For a satisfying meal, try Wahoo’s Fish House or stop by the Dead Dog Saloon for drinks and lighter bites. There are plenty of hiking options along the shoreline in and around Myrtle Beach, so spending a little time researching will help you find the perfect spot.
If you enjoy strolling the boardwalk and bar hopping, Myrtle Beach has plenty to keep you entertained. The Grand Strand Brewing Company is one of our top spots and is just two blocks from the beach. It has great beer choices, classic brewery fare and friendly staff that make it the perfect place to recharge when the weather heats up. You’ll find lots of other places along the boardwalk, each offering something special, so you could spend a week exploring and never visit the same one twice. Some favorites include Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar & Grill and RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar for that classic beach bar vibe. The Bowery is ideal for live music, while Ocean Front Bar & Grill next door offers great drink specials. If you’re in the mood for something different, head to the Sea Captain’s House, a beautiful spot right on the water built in 1930.

Myrtle Beach also has many festivals throughout the year. We happen to love the Carolina Country Music Festival. It’s a long weekend (Thursday through Sunday) that hosts live music on four stages from sunup to sundown. The location is very laid-back, the support staff are friendly and the weather is what you would expect when you are at the beach. Overall, it’s a great mix of country music and southern hospitality. So if you are looking for a beach town that feels just like a small town, give Myrtle Beach a try.
