A First Encounter With Hawaii That Became A Lifelong Love

Early in my travel career, I attended a conference in Hawaii on the Big Island. Never having ventured to the islands before, I was skeptical of what relaxing on the beach or sipping parasol‑topped cocktails could have to offer me. That skepticism vanished the moment I stepped off the plane. The rush of warm air combined with the sights, sounds and scents of the island captured me instantly. From that moment some 20 years ago, I have returned time and again to soak up the feeling of Hawaii. While I will explore my Big Island journey in a future piece, today’s focus shifts to a new island I love: Maui.

Where I Stayed In South Maui: Maui Bay Villas

Two years ago, as a savvy Hilton traveler, I secured a week just prior to platinum season at Maui Bay Villas, a Hilton Grand Vacations Club in South Maui. The resort’s claim to fame is its location on what is currently the last oceanfront parcel on the island with many units offering spectacular ocean views.

The staff are beyond helpful and genuinely welcoming. The concierge and manager both stand out for their ability to guide Guests into making the most of their resort and island stay.

Whale Season Views And Resort Life By The Water

Beginning in November during mating season, whales are often spotted playing in the waters just across the street from the resort. Maui Bay Villas is an excellent place to unwind, whether lounging by one of the pools, walking across the street to the sandy beach or swimming in the calm ocean waters. A beachside pool offers an alternative setting away from the main resort.

Maui Today: Tourism, Resilience And Respect

Maui continues to face the lasting impacts of the Lahaina fire, which forever changed the island. While reconstruction and restoration are ongoing, many residents remain displaced despite the tireless efforts of those on the island. Tourism, which is vital to Maui’s economy, suffered a significant setback but is steadily recovering. Locals are welcoming visitors back, as much of their livelihood depends on visitors renting properties and engaging with the island respectfully.

Maui has it all. While spectacular beaches can be found near Kihei in the south, Paia in the north and Kapalua in the west, the island offers far more than shoreline beauty. Hiking trails, waterfalls, ziplines and unforgettable mountain drives await those willing to explore.

The Road to Hana is a standout experience, featuring 617 hairpin turns and 46 one‑lane bridges. The route winds along a dramatic stretch of coastline that rewards patience with waterfalls, lush greenery and unforgettable views. Upcountry Maui provides a completely different perspective, offering sweeping vistas and cooler temperatures.

Pineapples, Spirits And Island Art

One unexpected highlight was the Maui Pineapple Tour, which takes visitors through the farm that produces the famous Maui Gold Pineapples. For those seeking a deeper experience, the adjacent distillery tour shows how those same pineapples are transformed into exceptional spirits.

Nearby, Makai Glass Maui offers visitors the chance to watch and participate in the creation of stunning glass art. These artisans are deeply connected to the island and express its essence through hand‑crafted sculptural pieces.

Dining On Maui: Pacific Rim Flavors And Iconic Experiences

Dining on Maui is an adventure, especially for travelers who prioritize enjoying food. Local cuisine is best described as a blend of Hawaiian and Asian Pacific Rim influences. Fresh fish, seafood and traditional luau foods like Kalua pig and poi play a central role.

One dining experience that stands out is Mama’s Fish House. Reservations must be made months in advance and the price point is high, but the setting and creativity make it a memorable meal. Arrive early to explore the gecko‑lined walkway and banyan tree root archway before dining beside the beach and tide pools. That said, there are few disappointing meals on Maui when you choose fresh and local.

Molokini Snorkeling And Turtle Town Adventures

My favorite Maui experience remains the Molokini Snorkeling Adventure departing from Ma’alaea Harbor. Snorkeling inside the ancient volcanic caldera offers views of more than 200 species of fish. Many tours include breakfast, lunch or both, along with glass‑bottom viewing rooms, music and even an open bar while cruising the coastline.

Most tours also stop at Turtle Town, where you may have the opportunity to swim alongside massive Hawaiian green sea turtles. The captains and crews excel at ensuring both safety and enjoyment, delivering the experience with true Maui hospitality.

Ho‘okipa Beach Park: A Sea Turtle Sanctuary

One final note for sea life enthusiasts. Ho‘okipa Beach Park on the North Shore is known worldwide for surfing and windsurfing, but it is also a vital sea turtle sanctuary at the gateway to the Road to Hana. On any given day, visitors may see dozens or even hundreds of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles resting on the sand. I hope to one day volunteer here, as these remarkable creatures are a gift to the planet and a powerful reminder of why conservation truly matters.
