Vacationing With Pets: Stress-Free Solutions During Your HGV Stay

Innovative tips for pet owners to make the most of your getaway

Wouldn’t it be great if your pets could be accommodated across the entire portfolio of Hilton Grand Vacations properties worldwide? In a perfect world maybe, but it’s much more likely that having pets stay would result in complete chaos!

Not all pet owners are created equal, so the idea that everyone would take good care of their furry friends isn't a guarantee, and that's coming from a pet owner who would love to take my dogs on vacation.

There is a middle ground, with ways to bring your pets with you on vacation without having them with you full time.

As long as your dog or cat is fully vaccinated and fairly sociable, most boarding facilities accept new clients without much hassle. Many modern kennels and boarding facilities offer online registration, allowing you to prepare for your visit without requesting an appointment or visiting in person. Even if there is an evaluation period (say, overnight), they are often happy to do so just prior to your first night’s stay. Then, if you want to check your pet out of the facility daily or for short periods, they are okay with that as long as you aren’t doing it more than a few times per day. That way, you can get your pooch for a day of hiking or a trip to the dog park, then return them in the afternoon for their overnight stay.

On one of my recent trips, the boarding facility had a swimming pool and full grooming services. When we returned home, both dogs looked and acted as though they had been to a spa. Boarding lets you stay closer to your pet and check on their well-being more often. And, if you tend to go to the same Hilton Grand Vacations properties year after year, the boarding facility will already know you and your pet(s).

Websites like Wag! and Rover provide local support for your pets, providing walking and/or boarding services. The pet sitters providing these services are usually vetted by the companies they work for, but you will also want to contact the provider individually with any questions. If you’re thinking of boarding your pet with one of these providers, you’ll also want pictures and/or videos of where your pet will be housed. While I have not used these services myself, I have heard that they are very good. Either way, the advantages of having your pet hosted by one of these providers are evident.

It’s never easy to leave your pets at home when you travel for any extended period of time. Hopefully, you can find a middle ground that works for you. I’ve used the pet sitting option, and it lowers the stress levels of vacation travel considerably for humans and their pets.
